A wildfire burning between Hope and Spuzzum, B.C., has triggered evacuation alerts and worsened air quality across the eastern Fraser Valley.
The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) says its alert affects about 240 people on 85 properties along both sides of the Fraser River between Spuzzum and Yale. Spuzzum First Nation has also issued an alert for seven reserves, covering roughly 25 properties and 60 residents.
“We just want to remind everyone that fire behaviour is unpredictable and can change quickly,” said FVRD communications manager Samantha Piper, urging families to prepare grab-and-go bags and sign up for emergency notifications.
Fire Conditions
The Sailor Bar wildfire, discovered late Saturday, was estimated at 120 hectares by Sunday evening and remains classified as out of control. Burning in steep, hard-to-reach terrain across the Fraser River from Highway 1, the blaze is producing open flame fronts but spreading slowly, according to B.C. Wildfire Service information officer Kimberly Kelly.
Six helicopters have been dropping water on the fire, but officials warn hot, dry weather and low humidity could cause it to flare up and spread more aggressively. The fire is suspected to be human-caused.
“The majority of the fires we’ve seen in the Coastal Fire Centre this season have been human caused. These are completely preventable and divert resources away from naturally caused wildfires,” Kelly said.
Evacuation Preparedness
Spuzzum First Nation administrator Crystal MacDonald said her community has been on edge after devastating fires in the Fraser Canyon in recent years. “Nobody ever wants to be evacuated and go through that,” she said, noting the First Nation has distributed emergency planning guides to families.
Air Quality Impacts
Smoke from the Sailor Bar fire has worsened air quality in the Fraser Valley, leading Metro Vancouver to issue an advisory for high fine particulate levels. Residents, especially those with health risks, are advised to limit outdoor activity.
DriveBC cautioned drivers not to stop along Highway 1 to view the fire.
