Walking pneumonia, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a mild bacterial infection affecting the respiratory tract, often in children and teens, though anyone can catch it. Unlike typical pneumonia, symptoms are generally mild, allowing those infected to continue daily activities, though some can experience severe illness. Symptoms include fever, cough, and fatigue, with potential for nausea and wheezing.
In recent months, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported increased cases, particularly in younger children, a trend now mirrored in Canadian hospitals. Experts believe the rise may result from reduced immunity due to COVID-19 precautions, as exposure to common pathogens was limited during that time. Treatment is generally with antibiotics like azithromycin, though many cases resolve without medication.
B.C. health officials advise regular hand-washing, staying home if unwell, and updated vaccinations to help reduce the risk of infection and complications from walking pneumonia.
