Police in Abbotsford, B.C., say residents were “thankfully” unharmed after bullets struck two vehicles parked in their driveway during an early-morning shooting linked to the province’s ongoing wave of extortion crimes.
The gunfire broke out just before 4 a.m. PT Tuesday in the 2500 block of Janzen Street. When officers arrived, they found two unoccupied vehicles riddled with bullet holes.
“Thankfully, the occupants inside the home — who were asleep at the time — were unharmed,” Sgt. Paul Walker said in a statement.
Police say the attack was targeted and is tied to an ongoing extortion investigation, part of a months-long crime surge affecting individuals and businesses in predominantly South Asian communities across B.C.
Part of a wider crisis
Surrey, Abbotsford and Delta have reported more than 125 extortion cases in 2025, involving threatening demands for cash through phone calls, texts, letters and social media — and often escalating into arsons or shootings when victims refuse to pay.
Earlier this month, the Canada Border Services Agency said it had opened immigration investigations into 78 foreign nationals potentially linked to the extortion network, with three people removed from Canada as part of the provincial-federal task force.
The Abbotsford Police Department is asking anyone with information about Tuesday’s shooting to contact investigators.
