Taylor Swift's Eras Tour is transforming Vancouver this weekend, with the city's iconic Gastown steam clock joining in the celebration by chiming her hit song "Shake It Off" every 15 minutes. The reprogrammed clock will play the tune through Dec. 13, in honor of the superstar's 35th birthday.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Gastown Business Improvement Society, brings a playful twist to the citywide Swift takeover. Walley Wargolet, the society’s executive director, said the idea initially started as an April Fools' joke but gained momentum as Swift’s Vancouver dates approached.

“The clock’s creator, Ray Saunders, who sadly passed away last month, was excited about the challenge and gave his blessing before his passing,” Wargolet shared. “It’s our way of adding a bit of joy to the incredible energy sweeping through the city.”

Traffic Warnings as Swift Events Converge

The City of Vancouver is urging residents and visitors to prepare for significant traffic disruptions this weekend as thousands of fans descend on downtown for Swift’s three concerts at B.C. Place. Additional events and festivities in the area are expected to exacerbate congestion.

From noon to midnight on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, full closures will impact key routes near the venue, including West Georgia Street, Robson Street, Pacific Boulevard, and the Cambie Bridge off-ramps. The city recommends walking, biking, or using public transit to navigate the downtown core.

An Unprecedented Weekend

Vancouver Police are deploying extra officers to manage the influx of fans, with estimates suggesting 70% of attendees are traveling from outside Greater Vancouver, many from other countries. Sgt. Steve Addison compared the excitement to the 2010 Olympics, calling the Swift effect "an unprecedented cultural event."

With the Gastown steam clock offering a musical nod to the global phenomenon and the city rallying to accommodate the influx, Vancouver is embracing Swiftmania wholeheartedly as it prepares for an unforgettable weekend.
