Two Uber Passengers Killed in Wrong-Way Highway 1 Crash in Burnaby, Driver Injured

Two passengers travelling in an Uber were killed and their driver seriously injured in a wrong-way collision on Highway 1 in Burnaby early Wednesday morning.

RCMP said the crash happened shortly after midnight when a pickup truck travelling in the wrong direction collided with a four-door sedan heading west on the highway.

Police later confirmed the sedan was operating as an Uber.

“Tragically, two passengers in the sedan were pronounced deceased at the scene,” RCMP said in a statement.

The Uber driver, a 50-year-old man from Coquitlam, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Two Surrey Residents Killed

At a Wednesday afternoon news conference, police said the two passengers who died were a 34-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, both from Surrey.

Their names have not been released.

Cpl. Brett Urano expressed condolences to those affected by the collision.

“Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and everyone affected by this collision,” he said.

Uber did not provide a response by the reporting deadline.

Pickup Driver Arrested

RCMP said the pickup truck was being driven by a 32-year-old Surrey man.

He was arrested and taken into police custody following the collision.

Police said he was later released as investigators continue gathering evidence. No charges have been announced.

Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Highway Closed for Hours

The collision forced authorities to close Highway 1 between Kensington Avenue and Sprott Street for several hours Wednesday morning while investigators examined the scene.

The highway reopened shortly before noon PT.

Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj acknowledged that the lengthy closure likely disrupted tens of thousands of commuters but asked motorists to keep the human consequences of the collision in mind.

“But just remember that we have two people that didn't make it home last night,” Kalanj said.

He added that the area has experienced an unfortunate number of serious collisions recently.

RCMP Looking for Dashcam Footage

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or travelled through the area around the time of the collision to contact investigators.

RCMP are particularly interested in dashcam footage recorded along Highway 1 between midnight and 12:30 a.m. PT Wednesday.

The investigation into the fatal collision remains ongoing.
