A fire in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood has displaced six residents and forced the temporary closure of a newly opened Italian restaurant due to water damage.

Crews from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services responded to the blaze around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at an older mixed-use building near East Eighth Avenue, close to the busy intersection of Broadway and Main Street.

Fire contained quickly

According to Assistant Chief Arnie Groenewegen, seven fire trucks and 28 firefighters were dispatched to the scene.

The fire started in a third-floor bedroom and was brought under control relatively quickly. However, the damage forced several people out of their homes.

Six residents have been displaced while fire investigators assess the building and determine the exact cause.

Possible electrical cause

Early indications suggest the fire may have been accidental.

Groenewegen said investigators believe it could be linked to an electrical issue, possibly involving a blanket, though the cause has not yet been confirmed.

Restaurant impacted

The fire also affected Osteria Otto, an Italian-inspired restaurant located on the ground floor.

The restaurant, which had only opened in December, suffered water damage as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze.

Owner Ignacio Arrieta said the restaurant was full at the time of the incident, and all patrons had to evacuate.

“I just hope everything goes smooth with insurance… and everyone is safe,” he said.

Next steps

Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the blaze, while affected residents and business owners begin recovery efforts.

The incident highlights the broader risks associated with older buildings, where electrical systems and fire safety conditions can pose added challenges.

For now, the focus remains on determining the cause and supporting those displaced by the fire.
