Two Rescued After Plane Crashes Into Remote Lake Near Squamish

Two people have been rescued after a small plane crashed into a remote mountain lake near Squamish, B.C.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre said it was contacted at 10:55 p.m. Monday about an overdue Cessna 172 in the Squamish area.
Cpl. Katrina Boehmer with Sea to Sky RCMP said the private aircraft had departed from Squamish Airport and failed to return.
Two people were on board the fixed-wing aircraft.
According to the rescue centre, the plane’s last known position and planned route were west of Whistler.
Military Aircraft Sent From Comox
Capt. Pedram Mohyeddin of Maritime Forces Pacific said JRCC Victoria immediately sent a CH-149 Cormorant helicopter and a CC-295 Kingfisher aircraft from 19 Wing Comox.
Search and rescue teams from Whistler and Squamish also assisted.
The rescue centre said crews found two people at Seagram Lake at about 2 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials believe the aircraft went into the water.
Survivors Found on Shore
No aircraft was found when crews arrived at the lake.
The two people were found on the shore near Seagram Lake, which is roughly 37 kilometres northwest of Squamish and surrounded by mountains, including Tricouni Peak and Cypress Peak.
They were rescued and taken to Vancouver International Airport, where they were transferred to paramedics.
Both Taken to Hospital
Brian Twaites with B.C. Emergency Health Services said paramedics were notified at 3:21 a.m. Tuesday about a plane crash in the Garibaldi area.
He said paramedics provided emergency medical care and transported both patients to hospital.
They were in serious but stable condition.
Transportation Safety Board Reviewing Incident
Police said the investigation will be referred to the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
In an emailed statement, the TSB said it is collecting information and assessing the incident.
The agency said that because the aircraft is reported to be submerged, there are currently no plans to deploy investigators to the site.
