RCMP in Prince George are investigating a shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning at a local homeless encampment, leaving a 15-year-old girl hospitalized with serious injuries.

The incident took place around 1 a.m. inside a recreational vehicle parked at Moccasin Flats, the city's designated area for overnight sheltering. Cpl. Jennifer Cooper confirmed the girl’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

Police say the shooting appears to be an isolated event and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Investigators are now appealing for witnesses or dashcam footage from anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident.

Moccasin Flats has been the focus of ongoing legal and political debate in Prince George. It was established as a permitted camping area following court decisions that restricted the city’s ability to remove unhoused individuals from public spaces due to a lack of shelter options.

The city has since sought a court injunction to clear the site, citing safety and livability concerns, though no decision has yet been made.

Police continue to gather evidence in the case, and no arrests have been reported as of yet. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
