A tragic hit-and-run in Surrey’s Fraser Heights neighbourhood has left a six-year-old girl dead and two other children injured, according to police.

The Surrey Police Service says the collision occurred just after 4 p.m. PT on Sunday at the intersection of 164 Street and 108 Avenue, where a grey pickup truck struck three children before fleeing the scene.

Emergency crews rushed to the site, but despite life-saving efforts, the youngest victim — a six-year-old girl — succumbed to her injuries. A seven-year-old girl sustained upper body injuries, and a 16-year-old boy suffered injuries to his leg and torso. Both were transported to hospital, where their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say the suspect vehicle was located around 5 p.m. near 101 Avenue and 160 Street, after reportedly hitting a parked vehicle. The driver was arrested at the scene.

“Police were on the scene very quickly and managed to locate the driver and arrest them,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton. “We’ve had to deliver some very sad and unfortunate and tragic news today. Not only is this a family’s worst nightmare — this is a police officer’s worst nightmare as well.”

While the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, police say alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

The intersection will remain closed into the night as officers conduct their investigation and gather evidence. Police are asking the public to avoid the area.

Houghton urged anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident to contact the Surrey Police Service.
