A senior is in critical condition after an alleged vehicle rampage through Vancouver’s West End early Friday morning that also left two police officers injured and sent multiple emergency crews rushing to the scene. Vancouver police say the incident began around 5:30 a.m. near Comox and Broughton streets, where officers received reports of a man driving erratically through the neighbourhood.

According to police, several witnesses had to scramble out of the way as the vehicle moved through the area, striking multiple objects and causing damage along the way. Investigators say the driver also went through the Nelson Park dog area before hitting a senior who was riding a motorized mobility scooter.

Police cruiser destroyed while stopping suspect

Police say the incident came to an end when the suspect rammed a responding police vehicle. The impact destroyed the cruiser and caused the suspect’s vehicle to flip onto its side. Vancouver police have said the officers in that cruiser appeared to put themselves at risk while trying to stop the driver.

The suspect was trapped inside the overturned vehicle and had to be freed by Vancouver Fire Rescue Services before being arrested near Comox and Bute streets. Multiple ambulances were also dispatched to the scene.

Senior in critical condition, officers also hospitalized

The injured senior was taken to hospital in critical condition, while the two Vancouver police officers were also transported for treatment. Police have described the officers’ injuries as non-life-altering.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Mental health and drug use being examined

Vancouver police say the motive remains unclear, but investigators believe mental health and drug use issues may have been factors in the incident.

The case adds to a growing list of serious vehicle-related incidents in the city and is likely to raise fresh questions about public safety, emergency response and mental health intervention in high-risk situations.
