Authorities are conducting an intensive search for a missing skier last seen at Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops, B.C.

Tomasz Jaholkowski, 68, was reported missing after failing to return to his hotel room or contact anyone following a ski run check-in at the resort’s West Bowl Express chairlift around 11:35 a.m. PT on Tuesday.

"We are very concerned for his well-being," said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn of the Kamloops RCMP in a news release. "Anyone who may have seen him or has information on his whereabouts is urged to contact police immediately."

Jaholkowski is described as 5’10”, weighing 180 pounds, with grey hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a red and black ski jacket, dark ski pants, and a dark helmet.

Search Operations

Search efforts are underway both within and outside the resort boundaries, involving RCMP members, search and rescue volunteers, and the Sun Peaks ski patrol. Helicopters and drones are assisting the ground teams in the challenging terrain.

The search is focused around the West Bowl Express chairlift, a newly opened area that provides access to terrain near the resort’s boundaries. Resort officials confirmed that Jaholkowski is the third skier to go missing in that area this year, though the other two individuals were quickly located outside the resort’s boundaries.

Resort Safety Measures

Sun Peaks Resort spokesperson Christina Antoniak said the resort is reviewing its safety measures to address potential risks associated with the new lift.

“The ski area boundary is double-roped and clearly signed,” Antoniak said. “However, with the allure of the new terrain, we’re assessing whether additional public messaging or measures are needed to keep skiers safe.”

The resort remains open as the search continues, but officials are urging visitors to stay within designated areas.

Safety Recommendations

On its website, Sun Peaks emphasizes the importance of staying within bounds for safety. For those venturing out of bounds, the resort advises traveling in groups, carrying avalanche training and safety equipment, and being prepared with food, water, and emergency supplies.

Jaholkowski’s disappearance highlights the risks of skiing near boundaries, and authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in locating him.
