The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (Downtown Van), which represents local businesses, reported that one of its safety ambassadors was attacked over the weekend in downtown Vancouver. The incident occurred when the ambassador stepped in to help a bystander being confronted by an aggressive individual. The ambassador called 911, and Vancouver police arrived quickly to arrest the suspect, believed to be intoxicated by drugs. While the ambassador sustained minor injuries, they are expected to recover.
Police reported that one victim left the scene, and the other chose not to participate in the investigation. Further charges may be considered if the victims come forward.
Downtown Van, whose safety ambassadors patrol and provide support services in a 90-block area, has recorded 40 incidents of hostility in recent months, seven of which were physical. The organization is now calling on all provincial parties to prioritize public safety measures, citing concerns over increased aggression and violence affecting local businesses, workers, and residents.
