Communities throughout British Columbia will gather on Monday to honor veterans for Remembrance Day. Observed annually on Nov. 11, the day commemorates members of the armed forces who lost their lives in service to Canada.

Vancouver's annual ceremony will take place at Victory Square, beginning at 10 a.m. PT. CBC News will broadcast the event live. This year marks the 100th commemoration at the Victory Square cenotaph, built in 1924 to honor those who served in the First World War. A commemorative flyover by the Royal Canadian Air Force is planned, weather permitting.

Other notable Lower Mainland ceremonies include a 10 a.m. event at Surrey’s Veterans Square, organized by the Royal Canadian Legion’s Cloverdale Branch. In Victoria, the official provincial ceremony at the Parliament Buildings will begin with a parade at 10:30 a.m. PT, followed by a ceremony at the Victoria Cenotaph.

Additional events will take place across the province, with the Royal Canadian Legion providing event details online.

According to a recent Ipsos poll for Historica Canada, more Canadians plan to attend this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies, with 37 percent saying they intend to participate, reflecting a growing commitment to honoring veterans' sacrifices.
