RCMP in northeastern British Columbia are appealing for public assistance as they investigate a violent home invasion and sexual assault in Fort St. John, where a suspect remains at large following an incident Tuesday night.

Police say an unidentified man allegedly followed a woman to her residence in the 8900-block of 87 Street, near the intersection of 89 Avenue, at approximately 11 p.m. on October 27.

According to investigators, the man entered the home but was initially frightened away by other people inside the residence.

The occupants immediately contacted police, prompting officers to search the surrounding neighbourhood.

However, the suspect was not located during the initial search.

Investigators say the man subsequently returned to the same residence, where he allegedly sexually assaulted a second occupant before being driven away again.

Police were called back to the property and have since launched an investigation to identify and locate the suspect.

Suspect Allegedly Returned After Initial Police Response

The sequence of events has raised particular concern among investigators because the suspect allegedly returned to the same home after being confronted by residents and after police had searched the surrounding area.

According to the RCMP, the first encounter began when the man followed a female resident to her home and entered without permission.

Other people inside the residence managed to scare him away, and officers responded to the initial report.

Despite searching the neighbourhood, police were unable to locate anyone matching the suspect's description.

Investigators say he later re-entered the residence and sexually assaulted another person who lived there.

The suspect was reportedly frightened away a second time before officers returned to the scene.

Authorities have not released further information about the people involved, including their ages or whether anyone sustained additional injuries.

The RCMP has also not disclosed whether the suspect was previously known to the residents or whether investigators have established a motive.

Police Concerned Suspect Could Reoffend

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, a spokesperson for the B.C. RCMP in Northern British Columbia, said the circumstances of the incident have caused significant concern among local investigators.

Cooper described the alleged behaviour as "very concerning" and said police believe the man may attempt to commit another offence.

The Fort St. John RCMP General Investigative Section has taken responsibility for the investigation.

Officers are working to establish the suspect's identity and determine his whereabouts.

Police are particularly interested in hearing from residents who may have seen suspicious activity in the area surrounding 87 Street and 89 Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Investigators are also seeking footage from residential security cameras, doorbell cameras and vehicle dash cameras that may have captured the suspect's movements.

Even footage that does not clearly show the man's face could potentially assist officers in reconstructing his movements before or after the incident.

RCMP Release Description of Suspect

Police have provided a physical description and details about the clothing the man was reportedly wearing.

The suspect is described as:

  • A man believed to be in his mid-30s.

  • Tall, with a heavier build.

  • Having a beard.

  • Wearing black pants, a black hoodie and a hat at the time of the incident.

Investigators are asking anyone who recognizes the description or has information about the man's identity or location to contact police.

The description is based on information gathered during the investigation, and authorities have not announced any arrests.

Public Asked to Help Ongoing Investigation

RCMP are encouraging anyone who was in the neighbourhood late Tuesday evening to consider whether they witnessed a person matching the description or recorded activity that could assist the investigation.

Residents and businesses with surveillance systems in the surrounding area may have footage relevant to the case.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fort St. John RCMP non-emergency line at 250-787-8140 and speak with an officer.

Police have not announced any charges or identified a suspect publicly.

The investigation remains active as officers continue gathering information and reviewing potential evidence.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of assistance from the public in locating the individual and addressing concerns about the possibility of another offence.

For Fort St. John residents, the case remains an ongoing police investigation, with officers seeking to identify the man responsible for the alleged intrusion and sexual assault.
