Police Watchdog Investigates Surrey Crash That Left Driver and Pedestrian in Hospital

British Columbia’s civilian police watchdog is investigating a serious crash in Surrey that sent a pedestrian and a pickup truck driver to hospital early Monday morning.
The incident happened at approximately 3 a.m. PT near 96 Avenue and King George Boulevard.
The Surrey Police Service said a police vehicle was involved in a collision with a pickup truck during an attempted traffic stop.
The incident subsequently resulted in a pedestrian being struck, according to police.
The pedestrian was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the pickup was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police Were Attempting to Stop Pickup
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., or IIO, said Surrey police officers had been attempting to stop the pickup when the initial collision occurred.
“A collision involving the pickup truck and a police vehicle subsequently occurred,” the IIO said in a news release.
The pickup driver did not stop following that collision, according to the watchdog.
“A short time later, the pickup truck was involved in a collision with a concrete SkyTrain barrier,” the IIO said.
Investigators are now working to establish the sequence of events and determine what role, if any, police actions played in the serious injuries.
Independent Watchdog Takes Over Investigation
The IIO investigates incidents involving police officers in British Columbia that result in serious injury or death.
Its mandate applies regardless of whether anyone has alleged misconduct or wrongdoing by police.
The watchdog will examine evidence surrounding the attempted stop, the collision involving the police vehicle and pickup truck, and the events that followed.
Investigators Seeking Witnesses and Video
The IIO is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant dashcam, surveillance or cellphone video to come forward.

The investigation remains ongoing.
