A person is in custody after accessing an aircraft without authorization at Vancouver International Airport early Monday morning, prompting a rapid response from police, airport staff and partner agencies. Richmond RCMP responded to the incident at about 4 a.m. PT.
According to airport officials, the individual gained entry to a secure apron area near the terminal by going over the fence line. YVR says the situation was contained within minutes and that airport operations were not affected. Airport restricted areas are limited to authorized personnel only under airport security rules.
Incident involved a Porter aircraft
Porter Airlines said one of its aircraft was involved in the security breach.
According to the airline, the individual accessed one of the plane’s wheel wells on the side of the aircraft. Porter said scheduled operations continued and the aircraft will undergo a full inspection before returning to service.
Security response launched immediately
YVR said the incident triggered a coordinated response involving the airport authority, partner agencies and the RCMP detachment stationed at the airport. Richmond RCMP say the person was arrested and remains in custody, while the investigation continues.
The airport authority said staff are now reviewing the incident and related security measures to help ensure continued safety at the airport.
