The Pattullo Bridge, connecting New Westminster and Surrey, B.C., has reopened after a fatal five-vehicle collision on Sunday morning caused its temporary closure.

According to Surrey Police, officers were dispatched to the scene near the east end of the bridge shortly before 8:30 a.m. following reports of a major crash involving five vehicles, one of which was a bus. Tragically, a female driver succumbed to her injuries at the scene despite life-saving efforts. Several other individuals sustained injuries, though the exact number and nature of those injuries remain undisclosed.

Emergency responders, including five ambulances, attended to the incident. Two individuals were transported to the hospital—one in serious condition and the other reported to be stable.

Authorities have stated that the cause of the collision is still under investigation. They are urging anyone with information, including dashcam footage, to contact the Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502.

This incident occurred as work continues on the replacement of the aging Pattullo Bridge, a project that has been underway for nearly five years. A 2016 report highlighted safety concerns with the existing structure, noting it did not meet modern wind and seismic standards. The replacement bridge, expected to be completed by 2024, will feature four traffic lanes, with the option to expand to six in the future, and will include wider lanes for improved safety.
