One person is dead after a fire engulfed three homes in Coquitlam, B.C., on Tuesday morning.

Coquitlam Fire and Rescue acting fire chief Chris Fox said crews were called to the 700 block of Roderick Avenue at around 9:10 a.m. after multiple 911 callers reported clouds of black smoke.

When firefighters arrived, they found three homes on fire, including a duplex.

Fox said heavy flames and smoke were visible from several areas both inside and outside the structures.

“Firefighters acted quickly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading,” he said in a statement to Peazzi.

Body Found Inside Residence

Coquitlam RCMP said the body of a resident was found inside one of the homes.

Police said an 18-year-old was treated at the scene.

An RCMP officer was also taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Officials have not released the identity of the person who died.

Neighbours Describe Fast-Moving Response

Neighbour Marylu Fernandez said she watched the fire from her window as emergency crews arrived.

“Everyone was curious, of course. I was looking from my window,” she said.

Fernandez said she was struck by how quickly ambulances, fire trucks and police arrived at the scene.

Her son, Francis Fernandez, said he woke up to the sound of neighbours screaming in fear.

He said the fire was only a few houses away from their home and described the situation as distressing for everyone nearby.

“To be honest, it’s quite painful to think about whoever owns that house, the mental and emotional state they were put through,” he said.

Two Properties Badly Damaged

Two of the three properties sustained extensive damage.

Fire crews remained at the scene for much of the day, working to extinguish hot spots and ensure the fire did not reignite.

A fire investigation team is expected to examine the site once it is considered safe.

Officials have not yet determined the cause of the blaze.
