Highway 99 in Surrey, B.C., was shut down in both directions Thursday evening following a multi-vehicle collision that sent five people to the hospital, including one with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) said the closures extended from King George Boulevard to the Highway 91 interchange, with Highway 91 also closed as far as the Highway 10 interchange. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton confirmed that the affected routes were expected to remain closed overnight for collision investigation.

As of 8:15 a.m. PT Friday, the closures were still in effect, according to DriveBC.

Emergency Response

B.C. Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) spokesperson Bowen Osoko said paramedics were called to the crash scene shortly after 5:30 p.m. Seven patients were treated at the scene, with two transported to hospital in critical condition and three in stable condition. One individual was airlifted from the crash site with what police described as “potentially critical injuries.”

Investigation Underway

Authorities have not yet provided details about the cause of the crash or the number of vehicles involved. SPS is asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from Highway 99 near the Highway 91 interchange at the time of the collision to contact them as they work to piece together what happened.

Traffic Impact

The closures have caused significant traffic disruptions, and motorists are advised to check DriveBC for updates and to use alternative routes where possible. Emergency services and police continue to investigate, and the highway is expected to reopen only once a thorough review of the scene is complete.

Appeal for Public Assistance

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward, as their evidence could help determine the events leading to the collision.
