Mark Carney has officially secured the Liberal Party leadership and is set to become Canada’s next prime minister, delivering a landslide victory with 85.9% of the vote—a margin even larger than Justin Trudeau’s in 2013.

However, Carney is not prime minister yet. He must first be sworn in by Governor General Mary Simon, and Trudeau will remain in office for the next few days or weeks to assist with the transition.

What Happens Next?

Carney does not yet have a seat in the House of Commons, raising speculation that a federal election could be called sooner rather than later.

The Liberal leader must also appoint a cabinet, and whether he retains much of Trudeau’s team or introduces fresh faces will be closely watched.

Trade War with Trump Looms Large

In his victory speech, Carney took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, calling them an attack on Canadian workers, families, and businesses.

"My government will keep our tariffs on until the Americans show us respect—and make credible, reliable commitments to free and fair trade," he declared.

What About the Other Leadership Contenders?

Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who finished a distant second, confirmed she will run in the next federal election. However, it remains unclear whether she will be given a role in Carney’s government.

Karina Gould, the former House leader, placed third with 3.2% of the vote and also plans to seek re-election.

Meanwhile, Montreal businessman and former MP Frank Baylis, who finished fourth with just 3%, has pledged his full support for Carney’s leadership.

With Carney now leading the post-Trudeau Liberal Party, the country awaits his next moves—especially whether he will seek a quick electoral mandate or try to govern with the existing Parliament.
