A man is in hospital with serious injuries after being shot by a police officer in Burnaby on Sunday morning, prompting an investigation by British Columbia’s civilian police oversight agency.
Burnaby RCMP said officers were called to a disturbance at a residence on Kingsway at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Police said that after officers arrived, a man approached them while carrying an edged weapon.
An officer then discharged their firearm, striking the man.
Man Taken to Hospital With Serious Injuries
RCMP said officers immediately provided first aid following the shooting.
The injured man was subsequently transported to hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office of B.C., or IIO, confirmed that he sustained serious injuries.
No other injuries were reported during the incident.
Police have not released the man’s identity or provided further details about the disturbance that initially brought officers to the residence.
Civilian Police Watchdog Takes Over Investigation
The IIO has now launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The agency is responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers that result in death or serious harm, regardless of whether there are allegations of misconduct.
Its investigation will examine the events leading up to the shooting and determine whether the officer’s actions may have involved an offence.
The involvement of the IIO does not itself indicate wrongdoing by police.
Investigators Seeking Witnesses
The IIO said it is seeking witnesses who may have seen the incident or have relevant information.
Further details about the shooting have not yet been released.
The investigation remains ongoing as the watchdog works to establish the sequence of events and circumstances surrounding the officer’s use of force.
