A man was killed in a daylight shooting Monday afternoon in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood, after gunfire erupted inside a business complex in one of the city’s busiest commercial areas. Surrey Police Service said officers were called just after 3 p.m. to the 13000 block of 76 Avenue, where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by police and paramedics, he died at the scene.

The shooting happened at a multi-business complex near 13049 76 Avenue. Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton said the violence unfolded in the foyer of the building, an area surrounded by shops, vehicles and pedestrians in the middle of the afternoon.

No arrests announced

Police have not released the victim’s identity and said no arrests had been made as of Monday. Investigators also said no suspect description was immediately available.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken over the case, and authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators.

Second fatal shooting in Surrey within days

The killing is the second fatal shooting in Surrey in less than a week. On April 29, another man was killed and a second person was injured in a separate shooting in the 6800 block of 148 Street, also in Surrey. That earlier case is being investigated by IHIT as well.

IHIT identified the victim in the April 29 shooting as 25-year-old Gursharan Singh Sohi and said that killing is believed to be connected to the ongoing B.C. gang conflict. Police have not publicly said whether Monday’s Newton shooting is linked to that investigation.
