Man Dies and Wildfire Ignites After Tractor Catches Fire Near Lumby, B.C.

RCMP are investigating after a man died in a tractor fire that also ignited a small wildfire on a rural property near Lumby, B.C., on Wednesday.
Police believe the man was operating a tractor and towing a baler on a property in the 1300 block of Trinity Valley Road when the machinery caught fire.
“Tragically, the man was unable to escape the fire and was found deceased close to the burnt-out tractor and baler,” RCMP Const. Chris Terleski said in a statement.
Fire Spread Through Dry Vegetation
Police said the flames quickly spread from the farm machinery into dry vegetation in the surrounding field.
The fire then moved into nearby trees and reached a hay shed on the property.
Neighbours and helicopter crews from the B.C. Wildfire Service worked to prevent the flames from reaching a house on the farm before the local fire department arrived, according to RCMP.
The wildfire grew to approximately 6.75 hectares but has since been classified as under control by the B.C. Wildfire Service.
Region Facing Elevated Fire Danger
The fatal incident occurred during a stretch of dry weather across the Okanagan region.
The area is currently experiencing high to extreme fire danger conditions, increasing the risk that fires can ignite and spread rapidly through dry grass, trees and other vegetation.
RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
