Vancouver police arrested a man on Sunday after he allegedly threatened people and tried to evade officers by hiding in a dumpster in the Kitsilano area.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said they responded to reports of a suspicious man armed with gardening shears in the backyards near the Arbutus greenway around noon. Officers located the man in an alley near Arbutus Street and West 11th Avenue, but he fled into a compound behind a business.

The suspect was found hiding at the bottom of a dumpster under several layers of garbage, police said. Despite being cornered, the man refused to surrender and still had the gardening shears in his possession.

To subdue him, officers used a police dog and fired beanbag rounds. The man, 31, sustained injuries and was taken into custody for medical treatment.

Previous Warrants and New Charges

The VPD said the suspect was already wanted on a provincewide warrant for assault, uttering threats, and other charges. Additional charges related to mischief, weapons possession, and breaching bail conditions are now being recommended.

Community Impact

The incident, which unfolded near a busy area of Kitsilano, caused concern among local residents. Police reassured the public that the arrest highlights their commitment to addressing safety issues promptly.

The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues.
