Police in Surrey have closed an attempted murder investigation into a 2024 attack that left a man seriously burned after the only suspect in the case was found dead.

Surrey police said officers were called to a forested area in the Fleetwood neighbourhood in August after human remains were discovered.

Investigators have since confirmed the remains belong to 33-year-old Kalid Yimer.

Police said criminality is not believed to have been involved in Yimer’s death.

Yimer Was Lone Suspect in 2024 Attack

Yimer had been identified by police as the only suspect in an attack on Aug. 2, 2024, in the 10200-block of City Parkway.

Police said a man was doused with an accelerant and then set on fire.

The victim survived but suffered serious injuries.

Investigators later identified a stolen vehicle they believed had been used by the attacker. Police recovered the vehicle the following day.

An attempted murder charge had been associated with the case, but police say the prosecution will no longer proceed following Yimer’s death.

Police Say Investigation Is Now Concluded

Surrey police said the attempted murder investigation is now closed.

The victim’s family has been informed of the development.

Staff Sgt. Tara Nicholls said investigators may never know what motivated the attack.

“While we may never learn the true motive of this horrible attack, we hope the victim and community can rest assured that police have found the person who was responsible,” Nicholls said in a statement.

Because Yimer died before the case could proceed through the courts, the allegations against him were never tested at trial.

Death Not Considered Suspicious

Police have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding Yimer’s death.

Investigators said only that they do not believe criminal activity was involved.

With the lone suspect dead, police say no further investigative steps are expected in the attempted murder case.

The attack had remained under investigation for more than two years before Yimer’s remains were identified.
