Liberal Braeden Caley Wins North Vancouver-Capilano Byelection as Party Sweeps Three Races

Liberal candidate Braeden Caley will become the new Member of Parliament for North Vancouver-Capilano after winning Monday’s federal byelection.

The race was one of three federal byelections held across Canada, with Liberal candidates also winning contests in Ontario and Quebec.

Caley, who previously worked with Prime Minister Mark Carney in the Prime Minister’s Office, defeated five other candidates in the North Vancouver riding.

“You've given me the greatest honour of my life,” Caley said during his victory speech.

“The chance to serve this community and the province we are so proud to call home, the country we love.”

Seat Vacated by Jonathan Wilkinson

The North Vancouver-Capilano seat became vacant in June after former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson resigned from Parliament to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union.

Wilkinson had represented the area since 2015.

In the previous federal election, he comfortably retained the riding with approximately 60 per cent of the vote.

The Conservatives last won the riding in 2011, when Stephen Harper led the party to a majority government.

Six Candidates Contested Byelection

Caley faced Conservative candidate Stephen Curran, NDP candidate Stephen Tweedale, Green Party candidate Shelley Luce and People’s Party candidate Ehsan Arjmand.

Independent candidate Jeff Monds was also on the ballot.

Caley’s victory keeps the riding in Liberal hands while adding another MP to Carney’s caucus.

Liberal Sweep Secures House Majority

The Liberals also won the two other federal byelections held Monday.

Those victories give the governing party a legislative majority in the House of Commons.

The result comes with six additional federal byelections expected in the coming months.

Parliament is scheduled to return for its fall sitting on Sept. 21.

Carney Congratulates Former Staffer

Carney congratulated Caley in a social media post Monday night, highlighting their previous working relationship.

“I know Braeden's values, his work ethic and his character,” Carney wrote.

“I look forward to working together once again to build a stronger B.C., and Canada, for all.”

Caley will now take his seat in Parliament as North Vancouver-Capilano’s new MP when the House returns for the fall session.
