International Student from India Killed in Altercation Near Fort St. John, B.C.

A 25-year-old international student from India has died following an altercation near Fort St. John in northeastern British Columbia.
The victim, Gurkirat Singh Manocha, was fatally injured during an incident at the Charlie Lake boat launch late Friday night, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Police say the altercation occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m. on March 13 and involved several individuals. Manocha sustained serious injuries during the incident and later died despite life-saving efforts.
Victim identified as student from India
Manocha was originally from Ujjain, in central India, and had moved to Fort St. John to pursue a business management program at Northern Lights College.
A statement from Akshat International School, where Manocha previously studied, expressed condolences to his family.
“In this difficult time, we stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and extend our heartfelt condolences,” the school said, adding that it hopes for peace for the departed and strength for his loved ones.
Officials respond
Mohan Yadav, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, said he has spoken with Manocha’s family and assured them that the Indian government will assist in arranging his final rites.
In British Columbia, Nina Krieger called the death “a tragic situation.”
Northern Lights College said it is aware of the incident and is focused on supporting students and staff while cooperating with investigators.
Investigation ongoing
The RCMP’s North District Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation, which police say involves multiple individuals.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances of the altercation or whether any arrests have been made.
Police say more information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
