Homicide investigators have taken over the investigation into the disappearance of a Burnaby man after police determined the circumstances were suspicious and likely involve criminal activity.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said it assumed conduct of the case after Burnaby RCMP raised concerns about the disappearance of 45-year-old Masood Masjoody.
According to police, Masjoody was reported missing on Monday evening after neighbours contacted authorities out of concern for his wellbeing. Investigators say an initial review by Burnaby RCMP concluded that his disappearance on Feb. 2 was out of character.
In a statement, IHIT said there are indicators suggesting criminality may be involved, prompting the transfer of the case to the specialized homicide unit.
Investigators say there is currently no evidence linking the disappearance to gang activity or the ongoing wave of extortion-related crimes in the region.
IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said police believe Masjoody’s disappearance was not random and that key information may still be missing.
“We believe some family members and friends who may have important information have not yet spoken to investigators,” Fong said.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen Masjoody, interacted with him around the time of his disappearance, or noticed unusual activity to contact investigators. Authorities say public tips are critical in cases where circumstances suggest criminal involvement.
Investigators did not release further details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Anyone with information is urged to contact IHIT or their local police department.
