Police in multiple southwest B.C. communities are investigating four separate crashes involving pedestrians over the past week — including two fatal incidents in Surrey that occurred less than 13 hours apart.
Two fatalities in Surrey
The first fatal collision happened Wednesday evening around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of 138 Street and 102 Avenue in Surrey. Police say an 81-year-old woman was struck and later died from her injuries.
Approximately 13 hours later, at around 7:30 a.m. Thursday, a second fatal crash occurred near 104 Avenue and 132 Street. A 45-year-old woman was killed in that incident.
Surrey police say both drivers remained at the scene in each case. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in either collision. The circumstances surrounding the crashes remain under investigation.
Hit-and-run in North Vancouver
In North Vancouver, police are searching for a driver involved in a hit-and-run collision on Feb. 5.
Authorities say a person using a wheelchair was struck while crossing in a marked crosswalk at the intersection of West 3rd Street and Bewicke Avenue. The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators have released video footage of the incident and describe the suspect vehicle as a grey sedan. Police are asking anyone who may recognize the vehicle or have additional information to come forward.
Nanaimo pedestrian dragged
Meanwhile, in Nanaimo, a woman survived being dragged a short distance by a vehicle Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred around 5:45 p.m. along Applecross Road near McRobb Avenue. According to police, the victim became trapped underneath a pickup truck described as a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado.
The driver stopped at the scene and contacted emergency services. The woman’s injuries have not been described as life-threatening.
Ongoing investigations
Police in all three communities are asking witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact their respective departments as investigations continue.
The string of incidents has renewed concerns about pedestrian safety across the region, particularly in busy urban corridors and intersections.
Authorities have not indicated whether any charges are pending.
