A Fort St. John man is facing four criminal charges following an alleged violent home invasion and sexual assault that prompted a police search in the northeastern British Columbia community.

Michael Broad, 34, was arrested on Wednesday, October 28, after investigators identified him in connection with an incident at a residence in the Matthews Park neighbourhood the previous evening.

According to the Fort St. John RCMP, the incident began around 11 p.m. on October 27 when a man allegedly followed a woman to her home in the 8900-block of 87 Street.

Police say the man entered the residence but was initially frightened away by other people inside the home.

Officers responded and searched the surrounding neighbourhood but were unable to locate the suspect.

The man allegedly returned to the same residence later that evening and sexually assaulted a second woman before fleeing again.

The circumstances prompted significant concern among investigators, who initially warned that the suspect could pose a risk of committing another offence.

Following Broad's arrest, however, police said they no longer believed there was an ongoing threat to the public associated with the incident.

Four Criminal Charges Approved Following Arrest

Broad has been charged with four offences in connection with the alleged incident:

  • Sexual assault with a weapon.

  • Breaking and entering a residence to commit an indictable offence.

  • Uttering threats.

  • Forcible confinement.

The RCMP confirmed the charges in a statement released on October 29.

The allegations involve serious criminal offences, although police have not publicly provided detailed information about the alleged weapon or the circumstances underlying the threats and confinement charges.

Investigators have also not disclosed the relationship, if any, between Broad and the people living at the residence.

The charges have not been proven in court, and Broad is presumed innocent unless found guilty.

Suspect Allegedly Returned After Police Search

The incident attracted particular attention because the suspect allegedly returned to the residence after occupants had already confronted him and contacted police.

According to the RCMP's initial account, the man followed one of the female residents to her home late Tuesday evening.

People inside the residence managed to frighten him away, allowing them to contact police.

Officers conducted a search of the surrounding streets but were unable to find the individual.

Investigators allege the man later returned to the property and entered the home again.

During that second encounter, police say he sexually assaulted another resident before being driven away once more.

Police received another call and continued investigating the incident.

The RCMP has not specified how much time passed between the initial police response and the alleged return to the residence.

Authorities have also not publicly released additional information about the two women, including their ages or whether they sustained physical injuries.

Community Assistance Helps Police Identify Suspect

After the initial incident, Fort St. John RCMP appealed to the public for information that could help identify the man.

Investigators released a physical description and requested assistance from anyone who had witnessed suspicious activity near 87 Street and 89 Avenue.

Police were particularly interested in surveillance footage from nearby properties and dash-camera recordings that might have captured the suspect's movements.

The investigation subsequently led officers to identify Broad.

Members of the Fort St. John RCMP Serious Crimes Unit arrested him on October 28 and took him into custody.

Const. Christiaan Dreyer, a media relations officer with the detachment, thanked residents for their cooperation in providing video recordings and information that assisted the investigation.

Police credited the community's prompt response with helping investigators identify the suspect.

The RCMP has not disclosed whether any additional evidence was recovered or whether further investigative steps are planned.

Court Proceedings Continue as Police Reassure Residents

Broad was held in custody following his arrest and was scheduled to make his initial court appearance on October 29.

According to reporting following his arrest, he was expected to return to court the following week for a bail hearing.

The proceedings will determine the next steps in the criminal case, including whether Broad remains in custody while the charges move through the courts.

The RCMP emphasized that the arrest had addressed its immediate concerns about public safety.

Const. Dreyer described the incident as unsettling for the community but confirmed that police did not believe there was an ongoing risk to residents connected with the alleged attack.

The investigation highlights the role of community cooperation in helping police identify individuals suspected of serious offences.

While the arrest has brought an end to the initial search, the allegations will now be examined through the judicial process.

Broad faces four criminal charges, and the case remains before the courts.
