A former secondary school teacher at a B.C. independent school has been banned from applying for a teaching certificate for 15 years after engaging in a sexual relationship with a former student.

According to a consent agreement posted by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Jonas Alexander Douglas Huston was found to have committed professional misconduct.

The agreement states that Huston began an “inappropriate intimate and sexual relationship” with a former student within five months of the student’s graduation.

Regulator Says Former Student Was Vulnerable

The consent agreement says Huston was aware the former student was vulnerable to his advances because of the personal relationship he had fostered with them.

The regulator found that Huston’s conduct had the effect of abusing or exploiting the former student, who suffered harm as a result.

The agreement does not identify the independent school district where Huston had been employed when the relationship began.

Teaching Certificate Cancelled

At the time Huston was reported to B.C.’s teaching regulator in January 2025, he was not working as a teacher, according to the agreement.

His teaching certificate was cancelled last November.

Under the consent agreement, Huston is barred from applying for a new teaching certificate for 15 years.

The decision means he cannot return to certified teaching in B.C. during that period.
