Residents of several properties on B.C.’s South Coast are being told to prepare to leave on short notice as officials monitor an increased risk of flooding in the area.
The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District has issued an evacuation alert for about two dozen properties in the Gates Lake and Poole Creek area.
The district says there is potential for a glacial lake outburst, which could increase the risk of overland flooding and debris flooding.
Monitoring Data Shows Elevated Risk
Officials say data collected from the Place Glacier monitoring system shows that the lake has reached the same volume recorded in 2025, when a lake outburst occurred.
A glacial lake outburst can happen when water held back by ice, moraine or natural debris is suddenly released. These events can send large volumes of water, sediment and debris downstream, creating dangerous conditions in nearby areas.
The evacuation alert does not require residents to leave immediately, but it means they should be ready to evacuate quickly if conditions worsen or an order is issued.
Residents Told to Prepare Emergency Bags
People at affected properties are being urged to prepare emergency bags with essential items.
Officials recommend including government identification, medication, insurance papers and other important documents, along with basic supplies needed in case residents are ordered to leave.
Residents are also being asked to make plans for pets, livestock and transportation in advance.
Public Asked to Avoid Waterways
The regional district is urging caution throughout the area while the flood risk is being monitored.
Residents and visitors are being asked to stay away from streambanks, creeks and other waterways, where conditions could change quickly.
Officials say the situation remains under observation and further updates will be issued if the risk increases.
