Nearly 1,000 students at Carihi Secondary School in Campbell River, B.C., will return to classes on Monday after a fire caused significant damage to the school last week.
The fire broke out on the night of Nov. 21, causing extensive damage to the gymnasium, mezzanine, drama area, and several classrooms. Crews from multiple firehalls responded to the blaze, which was reported at approximately 11 p.m. PT.
School District 72 Superintendent Geoff Manning said cleanup efforts have been ongoing throughout the week, with 70% of the school expected to be accessible to staff by Friday following an air quality test.
“We’ve worked hard to ensure students can return to in-person learning,” Manning said. “We’ll be utilizing nearby spaces in other schools and district facilities to accommodate any displaced classes.”
While the school will reopen, Manning noted that full repairs will take time and are unlikely to be completed before the end of the school year.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
Campbell River Fire Chief Dan Verdun said the fire department is continuing its investigation into the cause of the blaze. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have originated in the school’s kitchen area, though the exact cause remains unconfirmed.
The closure has impacted both students and staff, with many spending the week away from the school. Manning expressed gratitude for the efforts of the cleaning crews and the community’s patience during the disruption.
Carihi Secondary is one of two high schools serving the city of approximately 35,000 people, located on Vancouver Island’s east coast, more than 220 kilometres north of Victoria.
Students and staff are eager to resume classes, even as some adjustments to schedules and locations will be required. “Our priority is getting teachers in front of students and helping them get back on track,” Manning said.
The long-term restoration of the school will remain a focus in the months ahead as the district works to fully repair the damaged areas.
