The federal government is investing $2.5 million into a new affordable housing project in Abbotsford aimed at supporting residents facing housing insecurity.
The funding will go toward a development on Babich Street near the city’s downtown, which will include 14 single-room occupancy (SRO) units spread across two low-rise multiplex buildings.
The announcement was made by Ernie Klassen on behalf of federal Housing Minister Gregor Robertson.
“Fourteen new affordable homes — it’s a chance for a fresh start for many, including some of the most vulnerable people in the community,” Klassen said.
Project details
According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the development will consist of:
A three-unit building with six SRO units
A four-unit building with eight SRO units
The housing is designed for individuals who can live independently or semi-independently but are struggling with affordability or accessibility challenges.
Support for vulnerable residents
The project is being led by the Communitas Supportive Care Society, which is contributing more than $1.7 million toward the development.
CEO Matt Dirks said the housing is intended for people facing multiple barriers, including disabilities or financial hardship.
“We are aware that there are significant housing needs, especially for people dealing with complex challenges,” Dirks said.
He added that eligibility criteria and application details are still being finalized, but the goal is to support individuals who are currently unable to afford stable housing or whose needs are not being met in their current living situations.
Affordability goals
Under federal guidelines, at least 80 per cent of units must be priced at or below the 30th percentile of market rents for similar housing.
Dirks said the organization hopes to go even further in making some units more affordable, depending on community needs.
Addressing growing demand
The project comes as Abbotsford continues to face rising housing pressures, with advocates warning that affordable housing supply has not kept pace with increasing demand.
The new units are expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of the year, offering additional support for individuals seeking stable, affordable living arrangements in the community.
