Evacuations Underway on B.C.’s West Coast Trail as Heavy Rain Makes Sections Impassable

Parks Canada says multiple hikers are being evacuated from Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail after heavy rainfall made sections of the popular backcountry route impassable.

The agency said Monday that creeks and rivers along the trail are running high, creating dangerous conditions for hikers attempting to cross on foot.

More rain is expected through Wednesday, prompting Parks Canada to urge anyone with an upcoming trip to delay their departure until at least Thursday.

Popular Trail Known for Difficult Conditions

The West Coast Trail is located within Pacific Rim National Park and stretches approximately 75 kilometres along the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island.

It is one of the region’s most popular multi-day backpacking routes, attracting an estimated 7,500 hikers each year.

The trail is also known for being physically demanding, even for experienced hikers.

Parks Canada warns that visitors may encounter more than 100 ladder systems, deep mud, fast-flowing rivers and difficult West Coast weather while carrying heavy backpacks over rugged terrain.

Not everyone who begins the hike is able to complete it.

River Crossings Currently Unsafe

Parks Canada said current water levels have made it unsafe for hikers to cross some creeks and rivers on foot.

The agency is responding to multiple evacuation requests as conditions continue to deteriorate along portions of the trail.

Visitors with upcoming reservations are being strongly encouraged to reconsider their plans until conditions improve.

People who choose to delay their trip will be allowed to visit once Parks Canada determines the trail is safe again.

Refunds Available for Some Reservations

Parks Canada said visitors with reservations between July 27 and Aug. 1 can cancel their trips and receive a full refund.

Those who decide to postpone rather than cancel will be able to reschedule once conditions allow.

The agency is advising hikers to continue monitoring official updates before travelling to the West Coast Trail, particularly while heavy rainfall and elevated water levels remain a concern.
