Police in Delta, B.C., are investigating allegations of voyeurism after reports that a recording device was installed in a staff washroom at a FedEx facility in the Tilbury area.
The Delta Police Department said an employee of the business was arrested on July 7 and later released on conditions while the investigation continues.
Staff Sgt. Mike Whitely told Peazzi that police began investigating after receiving a report from an employee.
“Investigators believe the incident was isolated to this workplace, and there is no information to suggest a broader risk to the public,” Whitely said.
Workers and Supporters Protest Outside Facility
The allegations have sparked anger at the Delta facility, where employees and supporters gathered Monday evening to protest.
The women’s advocacy group Kaur Movement said six women have since come forward to report seeing videos of themselves using the washrooms on pornographic websites.
Group founder Gurpreet Kaur alleged that a camera had been hidden on garbage cans inside individual women’s toilet stalls. She said the company informed workers last week that recordings had been posted online.
FedEx Says Employee Was Terminated
In an emailed statement, FedEx said its first concern is the women affected.
The company said that after learning of the situation, it acted immediately by co-operating with law enforcement, terminating the employment of the individual responsible, strengthening security and providing counselling and support resources for team members.
FedEx said its safety, security and human resources teams began an internal investigation as soon as it learned of the covert recording, including reviewing concerns that had been raised and any new information.
The company said it has since implemented new safety and security protocols, provided onsite counselling and worked extensively to have the content removed from public view.
Advocacy Group Says Complaints Were Ignored
Kaur said FedEx should have acted sooner.
She alleged that the company had received several verbal complaints over the past two years about the suspect entering the women’s washroom at the approximately 300-worker facility.
“FedEx needs to do better, they knew about these reports, several reports have been made by several different employees in the past two years,” Kaur said.
“Why weren’t any of those reports taken seriously? This was all preventable.”
Kaur said dozens of employees have not been showing up to work since staff were told about the allegations.
Police Say FedEx Is Co-operating
Whitely confirmed that FedEx has been co-operating with police.
He also urged the public to be alert in places where privacy is expected, especially as recording devices become smaller and more accessible.
“With the advancement of technology and it becoming smaller and more accessible we’d just like to tell the public, especially in places where privacy is expected, if you see anything unusual or out of place please contact the police,” he said.
The allegations have not been proven in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
