A hazardous chemical leak in Burnaby’s Big Bend neighbourhood Thursday night sent four people to hospital and prompted the evacuation of over 80 individuals from nearby buildings.
According to the Burnaby Fire Department, crews were called to the 8000-block of Wiggins Street shortly before 11 p.m. after reports of a strong chemical smell in the area. Using air monitoring equipment, responders detected bromine gas—an irritant known to affect the respiratory system—and quickly traced the source to a nearby building.
Four employees working at an adjacent business reported symptoms including throat, nose, and lung irritation. They were treated at the scene with oxygen before being transported to hospital by B.C. Emergency Health Services. All were in stable condition, according to BCEHS.
As a safety measure, firefighters evacuated more than 80 people from nearby facilities while setting up safety zones and closing roads. The affected buildings were ventilated and the scene declared safe before occupants were allowed to return.
Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing risk to the public and no further release of chemicals is expected. Bromine, a reddish-brown liquid at room temperature, can become dangerous when airborne, causing breathing difficulties and eye irritation.
WorkSafeBC has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the gas release.
