Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has scheduled a byelection in the federal riding of Cloverdale-Langley City, B.C., set for Dec. 16, following the resignation of former MP John Aldag earlier this year.
Aldag, who represented the Liberals from 2015-19 and again from 2021 until May, stepped down to run for the B.C. NDP in the provincial election. He was defeated in the Langley-Abbotsford riding by B.C. Conservative candidate Harman Bhangu, securing just under 34 percent of the vote.
Madison Fleischer, a local business owner and community leader, will run for the Liberals in the upcoming byelection, emphasizing her focus on affordability, healthcare, climate action, and job creation. "I’m fighting to make life more affordable, deliver stronger public healthcare, take bold climate action, and create new local jobs and an economy that works for everyone," Fleischer said in a news release.
The riding, which spans parts of Surrey and Langley, has been closely contested in recent federal elections, with Aldag narrowly losing in 2019 and winning by about 1,650 votes in 2021. The federal Conservatives aim to reclaim the seat with candidate Tamara Jansen, a former MP who held the position from 2019 to 2021.
Elections Canada has announced that there will be four advance voting days from Dec. 6 to 9, with additional options to vote at the Elections Canada office or by mail before Dec. 16. The Cloverdale-Langley City race marks the 11th federal byelection since 2021.
