British Columbia’s police oversight agency has been called in following the death of a person in Burnaby on Tuesday evening.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) confirmed the incident occurred near Oxford Street and North Gilmore Avenue.

The IIO is a civilian-led agency responsible for investigating incidents where a person has died or suffered serious harm, and where police actions or inactions may have been a factor — whether officers were on or off duty at the time.

At this stage, the watchdog has not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the death. It said additional information is expected to be provided later on Wednesday.
