The search for British Columbia’s most beloved animal symbol has entered its second round — and the competition is fierce. Eight iconic species remain, including bears, salmon, sea otters, and more, all vying for the province’s symbolic crown.

Among the most talked-about matchups is chinook vs. sockeye salmon. While chinook (also known as "king salmon") is prized for its size and rich flavour on the grill, sockeye’s vibrant red hue and firm texture make it a smoked delicacy. But beyond taste, both fish are foundational to B.C.’s ecosystems.

“Everything's interconnected,” said Andrew Trites, director of UBC's Marine Mammal Research Unit. “Salmon support killer whales, otters, even the forest — when bears drag carcasses into the woods, they fertilize the trees.”

The round also features:

  • Orca vs. sea otter

  • Steller’s jay vs. marmot

  • Spirit bear vs. grizzly bear

“These animals hold deep cultural and emotional significance,” said Trites. “People are moved by encounters with them — from the majesty of an orca pod to the awe of watching spawning sockeye.”

Voting is open until 10 p.m. Pacific time. Cast your vote and help decide which animal truly captures the spirit of B.C.
