The BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) implemented a lockout at B.C. ports at 4:30 p.m. PT on Monday, escalating a labour dispute with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 514, which had begun strike actions. The BCMEA stated the lockout aims to ensure an orderly wind-down of port operations amid ongoing disputes over automation and job security.

The ILWU accused the BCMEA of “recklessly” pushing for federal intervention and reiterated its commitment to protect jobs from automation. With the potential shutdown affecting $800 million in daily trade, industry leaders and the Canadian Federation of Independent Business are urging federal action to deem ports an essential service. Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon emphasized that the responsibility lies with the parties to reach a deal, while federal mediators remain on standby.
