B.C. Police Watchdog Investigating Fatal Shooting Near Surrey Elementary School

B.C.'s Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is examining the fatal police shooting of an individual outside an elementary school in Surrey on Sunday.
According to B.C. RCMP, officers were dispatched to the 7000-block of 188 Street at approximately 2:40 p.m. PT after receiving reports of a person in distress with a firearm.
Police say an interaction occurred near 185 Street and 70 Avenue, during which officers fired their weapons. The suspect sustained a gunshot-related injury and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency medical teams were staged nearby and immediately called in, but were unable to save the individual, according to RCMP.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not released the person’s age, gender, or identity.
The IIO, which oversees all police-involved incidents resulting in serious harm or death, has now launched an independent investigation into the case.
The agency will determine whether police actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the given circumstances.
