B.C. health officials are encouraging residents to get the updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines as viral respiratory illnesses, including influenza and COVID-19, are expected to rise during the fall and winter months.
During a press conference, B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry emphasized the importance of practicing healthy habits to protect against illness. "This is the time of year when we see increases in viral respiratory illnesses in B.C., including influenza and COVID-19," Henry said. She urged residents to cover coughs, wash hands regularly, stay home if sick, wear a mask if experiencing lingering symptoms, and receive the updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines.
Residents registered with the Get Vaccinated program will receive notifications to book their appointments. Both vaccines can be administered together at participating pharmacies, health clinics, and primary care offices. Health Canada has approved the updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines targeting the KP.2 subvariant for individuals six months and older.
On October 15, 2024, a record number of vaccinations were administered in B.C., with 81,859 doses given in a single day.
Vaccines are free of charge and are available across the province at over 1,300 locations. Those who need assistance booking their appointment can call 1-833-838-2323.
The BC Centre for Disease Control has reported an increase in COVID-19 activity, with rising wastewater testing rates in the Fraser Health, Interior Health, and Northern Health regions. However, cases of seasonal flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remain low.
The province is urging everyone aged six months and older to receive their flu and COVID-19 vaccines, which are available by appointment both online and by phone.
