B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey Diagnosed With Treatable Early-Stage Cancer

British Columbia Finance Minister Brenda Bailey says she has been diagnosed with early-stage cancer and will undergo treatment over the summer.
Bailey announced the diagnosis in a social media post, describing the cancer as treatable and saying she has been given a good prognosis for a full recovery.
She said she expects to return to her duties in time for the fall session of the B.C. legislature.
Bailey Plans to Undergo Treatment This Summer
In her post, Bailey said she has been working with Premier David Eby to determine how best to manage her treatment while ensuring the government’s work continues.
She said additional information about those arrangements is expected Friday.
Bailey did not provide further details about the type of cancer or the specific treatment she will receive.
Diagnosis Comes Days After Fiscal Update
The announcement comes just days after Bailey delivered the province’s latest fiscal update.
On Monday, she reported that British Columbia’s deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year finished $3.3 billion lower than previously projected.
The improved result was attributed to higher government revenues and lower spending on capital projects than had been anticipated.
Other B.C. NDP Legislators Have Faced Health Challenges
Bailey is the latest member of the B.C. NDP caucus to publicly disclose a significant health issue.
Grace Lore announced in December 2024 that she had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and later stepped away from her duties while receiving treatment.
Another NDP legislator, Joan Phillip, has also been dealing with an unspecified illness. Premier David Eby publicly asked for prayers for Phillip in April.
Bailey said she remains optimistic about her recovery and intends to return to work once treatment is completed, with the fall legislative session as her target.
