The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) in British Columbia has revealed that a May cybersecurity breach allowed hackers to access sensitive information, including tuberculosis test results, insurance claims, and personal details like addresses and health numbers. The breach affected First Nations individuals holding a Certificate of Indian Status who lived or recently resided in B.C., as well as some non-First Nations family members who had TB screening before 2016.
The FNHA detected the breach during its execution, limiting the impact. Third-party cybersecurity experts assisted with the investigation, which comes amidst similar attacks on B.C. institutions like the provincial government and London Drugs. FNHA CEO Richard Jock highlighted the increasing need for strong cybersecurity measures as digital threats grow. To support those affected, the health authority is offering credit monitoring services to those whose status card numbers were compromised.
