At least 20 residents have been displaced after a fire ripped through an apartment building in Richmond, B.C., on Tuesday evening.

Richmond Fire Rescue says crews were called just before 8 p.m. to the area of Seventh Avenue and Broadway Street, where they arrived to find heavy smoke and flames shooting from the roof of the building.

Firefighters quickly began evacuating residents while working to contain the blaze to the upper floor. Assistant deputy chief of operations Grant Wyenberg says everyone made it out safely and no injuries have been reported.

Photos and videos taken by bystanders show fire punching through the roofline as crews worked from the ground and aerial ladders.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The City of Richmond’s emergency response team is now assisting displaced tenants with temporary shelter and support as building assessments continue.
