Eileen Moseley, who joined the U.K.’s Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) just after her 17th birthday in 1942, will be honored today in White Rock, B.C., in a ceremony celebrating WWII veterans. Moseley, now 99, recalls both harrowing and joyful moments from her service, including memories of friendships and a tap dance show she helped organize for fellow soldiers.
Moseley enlisted just months after her home was bombed during the Blitz but was eager to contribute. She served as a driver, transporting soldiers and airmen from crash sites, often under threat of bombings. Despite the wartime hardships, Moseley remembers her time with fondness, especially the camaraderie and the chance to bond with other service members.
To boost morale, Moseley and friends created a dance show for army personnel who had no place to unwind, wearing costumes fashioned from white sheets. Moseley’s daughter, Melanie Rantucci, says her mother’s stories have always highlighted the friendships and resilience she gained during her time in service.
The ceremony will recognize Moseley’s service and honor the sacrifices made by veterans like her who served nearly eight decades ago.
