Three individuals are dead following a late-night incident in Maple Ridge, B.C., with one of the fatalities resulting from a self-inflicted injury, according to the province’s police oversight agency.

Rebecca Whalen, spokesperson for the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of B.C., confirmed Thursday that RCMP were called to a residential area just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday. Prior to their arrival, two individuals were already deceased. A third person died shortly after, reportedly from a self-inflicted injury.

Few additional details have been released as the IIO launches its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the police response.

The IIO, a civilian-led agency, is mandated to investigate all incidents in B.C. involving police officers that result in death or serious harm, regardless of whether there is an allegation of wrongdoing.

More information is expected as the investigation progresses.
