Homicide investigators have identified the young man who was fatally shot inside a vehicle in Surrey, B.C., as 18-year-old Gaurav Deol.
Deol was found just before 12:30 a.m. on May 31 in the area of 138 Street and 62 Avenue. Police said the vehicle he was in struck a power pole after the shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, known as IHIT, released Deol’s identity on Tuesday as investigators continue working to understand his movements, activities and contacts in the days leading up to the fatal shooting.
Police Believe Shooting Was Targeted
No suspects have been named, but investigators say they believe the shooting was targeted.
Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said police are working closely with Deol’s family as the investigation continues. She emphasized that Deol was a very young man and that his family is now grieving his loss.
Fong also said investigators want to be careful about speculation surrounding the case.
She noted that Deol himself did not have a criminal record, but investigators have found that he had recent contact with people associated with organized crime. Police say that connection is now being explored as a possible motive.
Burned Vehicle Linked to Homicide
Shortly after Deol was found, police located a white Toyota SUV on fire nearby.
IHIT has confirmed the burned SUV has been linked to the homicide, though investigators have not released further details about how the vehicle may have been involved.
Police are continuing to gather evidence and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Surrey Records 13th Homicide of the Year
According to the Surrey Police Service, Deol’s death marked the city’s 13th homicide of the year.
The killing adds to ongoing concerns around targeted violence in the region, particularly where investigators believe organized crime connections may be involved.
The investigation remains active, and police have not yet announced any arrests.
