A 17-year-old boy has died following a tragic cliff-jumping incident at Comox Lake over the weekend.
According to Comox Valley RCMP, emergency crews were called to the area known as Devil's Ladder around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, after receiving reports that a youth had jumped from a cliff into the water and failed to resurface.
Nearby paddleboarders quickly located the teen in the water and began performing CPR. Firefighters arrived moments later and took over resuscitation efforts. Despite their attempts, the teen was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"This is a heart-breaking loss for the community," said Const. Monika Terragni. "A young life, just 17 years old — it's a tragedy that touches everyone, whether you knew him personally or not."
The B.C. Coroners Service is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. RCMP have stated there is no evidence of foul play at this time.
Officials have not released the teen’s name out of respect for the family’s privacy.
